Oren: September, 1951
Big ideas fueled by big egos
required big money. Like most people in Las Vegas, Oren now understood that.
Each new casino hotel ratcheted up growth and tourism. But until tonight while
the sheriff waited to get into Frank Sinatra's Vegas debut at the Desert Inn and
overheard a conversation, he had no idea how that translated into dollars and
cents. A pair of Meyer Lansky’s Miami men in front of him debated what a million
dollars in hundred dollar bills weighed.
“That’s a lot of green,” said one.
“Gotta be at least a hundred pounds.”
The other hood
laughed.
“A million in hundreds is twenty
pounds, shmuck. Three million fits in a suitcase easy. A duffel bag is
five.”
