More
than three weeks after the Watts Riots finally ended in smoldering ruin, the
City of Angels had edged into jumpy calm. s cars set ablaze, and 34 died. But the game goes on at Dodger Stadium "After Koufax fanned the first two Cubs, veteran Harvey Kuenn came up to pinch-hit. One batter from a perfect game, the radio crackled with tension.
“Twenty-nine thousand people and a million butterflies,” Scully said.
The count went to two balls and two strikes.
“Sandy into his windup, here’s the pitch.” A momentary pause, then, “Swung on and missed, a perfect game!”
The crowd roared. Scully said nothing for more than half a minute.
Then, “On the scoreboard in right field it is 9:46 p.m. in the City of the Angels, Los Angeles, California. And a crowd of 29,139 just sitting in to see the only pitcher in baseball history to hurl four no-hit, no-run games. He has done it four straight years, and now he caps it: On his fourth no-hitter he made it a perfect game. And Sandy Koufax, whose name will always remind you of strikeouts, did it with a flurry."
