Howard Hughes and Orren head to Las Vegas atomic testing grounds

In most riveting chapter ever of World of Hurt

By Patti Pietschmann

Chapter 33 of World of Hurt is one of the series' most riveting ever and a must read. If you haven't starting following the book go back to Chapter 1 and you won't be able to stop, I promise.

Oren: March 31, 1952
The peeling front door of the rented house near the Desert Inn that Howard Hughes called “the green house” was unlocked. Oren walked in and went into the kitchen that Hughes used for an office. He sat in pajamas at the littered kitchen table stacking papers and didn't look up. Oren pulled a chair up opposite Hughes and waited.
When Hughes finally spoke, he kept his eyes on the table. There was no small talk.
“Did you hear about the Comet, Oren?”
“What comet do you mean, Howard?”
“Not a comet, sheriff, the Comet—the first civilian jet airliner. Four turbojets buried in the wings and seats for about fifty passengers. It’s going into service with BOAC next month.”

Potty-mouth ER doc getting closer to diagnosing half-dead naked man

In explosive, exciting Chapter 30 of World of Hurt

Randy hung in the back of the ER cubicle trying to stay out of the way as the pit bull emergency doctor hurried over to a phone and yelled into it.

“Page Martone to get his skinny ass to ER twelve fast as those spindly legs can move.”

She slammed the phone back down and resumed examining the nearly dead guy inch by inch. The monitors made alarmed noises.

Randy said, “What’s wrong with him?”

She spoke to the nurse without looking at him.

“Epinephrine, stat.”

S. Weinberg, M.D., looked up at Randy. He knew what was coming.

“Let’s see. His vitals are crap, he’s unconscious, his heart is barely ticking, and his organs are probably shutting down. What’s wrong with him is he’s fucking dying.”

He was beginning to understand that she used hostility, vulgarity and sarcasm as a kind of armor to keep people at a distance. It seemed to work well for her.

He asked another question he knew would get a reaction.

“Why is he blue?”

He wasn’t disappointed.

“Unless he escaped from that Blue Man show, I don’t have a fucking clue.”

Excitement in the ER with Randy and foul-mouthed Trauma Unit MD

World of Hurt
A Novel of Las Vegas
Richard J Pietschmann
Chapter 29
Randy and the foul-mouthed but honey-voiced trauma surgeon stood in the crowded corridor and glared at each other. They paid no attention to the personnel and gurneys streaming around them like a fast-flowing creek parting around a boulder. Neither did the almost hairless, blue-tinged guy slumped in the wheelchair between them.
“He needs help, now,” Randy said.
“Go fuck yourself,” she said.

A comatose naked man, foul-mouthed ER doctor and Arden star in Chapter 28 of World of Hurt

World of Hurt by Richard J Pietschmann just keeps getting better
by Patti Pietschmann

She regarded Randy with cold, hostile eyes.

“What the fuck do you think you’re doing, asshole?”

She snarled it in a slow Southern drawl.

He held up his badge toward her.

“I’m a cop.”

“Yeah, well, I’m Tinkerbell and this is my nightmare.  Get out of it now, motherfucker, before I shit fairy dust all over you.”

Chapter 26

August, 13, 1965: Los Angeles Ablaze
Ever since President Kennedy was assassinated nearly two years ago, the world seemed to go more and more insane. Malcolm X was killed in February and in March racial tension reached a bloody boiling point at Selma and Montgomery. Meanwhile, a pointless war metastasized into a beast that fed upon itself, a generation gap yawned into a chasm of mistrust, and atomic brinksmanship terrified an already terrified planet as stockpiles of nuclear weapons grew into the tens of thousands.
Arden couldn’t say if he was more horrified or exhilarated. Hate, savagery and paranoia seemed pumped into the very air the country breathed, yet he was thrilled that missionary work had allowed him to explore an exciting new world of interesting ideas and different people on and around the Sunset Strip.

Chapter 22 World of Hurt: explosive evidence of nuclear testing in Las Vegas

Tyler heaved a weary sigh.

“Yes, sheriff, that is at least partly true, but we monitor weather conditions carefully before every test, and that includes wind direction. Besides, those dust clouds rise to 10,000 feet or more and dissipate quickly. Even if some dust fell locally, the brief half-lives of radionuclides reduces radiation to insignificant readings similar to normal background levels very quickly.”

Tyler talked past Oren to the room.

“Everyone should understand that the low potential for radiation and fallout complications is the main reason the Proving Ground is situated where it is.”

He held up a forefinger.

What happens in Vegas is Chapt. 19 of World of Hurt by Richard Pietschmann

The plot thickens as Randy's character comes out

Excerpt from World of Hurt by Richard Pietschmann
Minutes later he pulled to a stop behind several patrol cars with their doors left wide open and took in the mesmerizing calamity spread over the intersection. He slowly got out and marveled at the breathtaking thrill that true bedlam aroused. The pavement was alive with flames, flashing lights, billowing smoke and the shouting of adrenalin-stoked voices that flimsy crime scene tape had no chance to contain. He tried to push the excitement from his head, but the juice of it was just too powerful.

Badge held out in front, he ran toward the pandemonium and saw a uniform he recognized.

He slowed to a walk and calmed himself.

“Nice morning, officer.”

The cop took a beat to respond, eyes focused on the scene in front of her

Richard J Pietschmann's thriller gets 'atom-ized'

Have you been following World of Hurt?

To tease your appetite for reading intriguing fiction mixed with startling facts, here are a couple of excepts:
"Oren expected lots of problems, ones that would be even bigger than atomic bombs"

VEGAS ATOM-IZED
Thousands See, Feel Effects of Detonation

Lively news reports aside, the good citizens of Las Vegas appeared only momentarily alarmed. The newspaper reported a craps player at the Golden Nugget downtown who said he shrugged when he felt the shock, realized the probable cause was an atomic bomb, and went right back to the game.

Chapter 13 of World of Hurt has frightening twist

Oren and Mickey discover frightening event in Las Vegas

World of Hurt
A Novel of Las Vegas

Richard J Pietschmann

Chapter 13

Here's a teaser that will make you hunger for more

VEGAS A-BOMB POPS

Oren wasn’t the only one who understood that nothing nuclear had popped at all—it was the thunderclap detonation of an ordinary high-explosive bomb dropped in a dry-run simulation of the real thing.

A sudden breeze puffed out of windless air and riffled the hair poking out underneath Oren’s cattleman hat. That activated the primitive center of his brain, the part devoted entirely to survival. An involuntary warning shiver instantly flashed down his spine and prepared Oren to flee or fight. But then the slower pair of evolved brains wrapped around the ancient core intervened, using reason and experience to tell Oren that he had nothing to fear from the event he had experienced. The breeze was from the flight of a ruthless hunter uninterested in him gliding soundlessly within inches of his head. It would have been the only warning any prey could hope to detect before the great horned owl ripped it apart.

Only then did Oren exhale, the visible breath surprising him with the knowledge that he had stopped breathing.

Here is your moment of Zen Chapter 12 of the gripping novel "World of Hurt" by Richard J Pietschmann

If you haven't fired up your mobile device  to read this electrifying novel you really need to start now. No kidding folks,  it's one of the best books of summer 2016 by a top journalist and screen writer:

This is but one paragraph to get your literary juices flowing:
Skin bitch left and came back cradling three gins against her tiny swastikas and lined them up on the bar. Squires took his time studying them, and then picked up one bottle that said Nolet’s. He gazed at the bottle as if he had found buried treasure.

“It is a violation of the laws of nature for such a fine gin to be found in a joint as benighted and wretched as this one, yet it appears that the fates have once again smiled upon me. Take this elixir, Jennie Lynch, and pour an over-generous portion into a shaker into which you have put exactly three drops of your finest vermouth and filled to the top with fresh ice, not the partially melted ice you foist on the unwashed but ice that is frozen so solid it steams. Bring this shaker and the largest cocktail glass you have and put them here in front of me. You will then stir twenty-five times as I watch, half clockwise and half counter-clockwise, place a single large olive in the glass and pour in the sacred creation until only fluid dynamics keeps it from spilling over. I will then kvell at your singular achievement.”

Summer reading at it's best online at Blogspot.com 'World of Hurt' by Richard J Pietschmann

World of Hurt
A Novel of Las Vegas

Richard J Pietschmann

Chapter 10

Here is an excerpt from this weekend's post of Richard J Pietschmann's phenomenal novel serial, a must read....

"The Lucky was found in a neighborhood near the Strip that had sprung up after World War II as a convenient address for casino and hotel workers. Everybody still called it Naked City, the name coming from the showgirls who once had gotten their full-body tans around its swimming pools and on its rooftops. Naked City now was somewhat less glamorous: A dozen tight streets cornered against railroad tracks with worn one- and two-story buildings slumped into the desert. Anyone looking for a convenient patch of original desert where a man with a shovel, a full moon and some alone time could bury something could do worse than the needle-strewn empty lots near the Lucky."

World of Hurt
A Novel of Las Vegas

Richard J Pietschmann

Chapter 9

Jazzed, Arden repeated in his head. He knew who “Frank” was, his father talking like another member of Sinatra’s party gang. Worse, it was obvious his father had planned this stop all along and was just waiting for his old pal to tell him when to show up. Arden’s trip to L.A. was delayed this long to suit a singer’s schedule. Read Chapter 9--which gets into father/son relationships, Frank Sinatra, Mormons and Hollywood back in the day--at www.worldofhurtvegas.blogspot.com you  will thank me  for sending you there.
