Ever since President Kennedy was
assassinated nearly two years ago, the world seemed to go more and more insane.
Malcolm X was killed in February and in March racial tension reached a bloody
boiling point at Selma and Montgomery. Meanwhile, a pointless war metastasized
into a beast that fed upon itself, a generation gap yawned into a chasm of
mistrust, and atomic brinksmanship terrified an already terrified planet as
stockpiles of nuclear weapons grew into the tens of
thousands.
Arden couldn’t say if he was more
horrified or exhilarated. Hate, savagery and paranoia seemed pumped into the
very air the country breathed, yet he was thrilled that missionary work had
allowed him to explore an exciting new world of interesting ideas and different
people on and around the Sunset Strip.
